Female poets urged to stand up

Female poets have been encouraged to stand up for themselves and be counted as no one will do it on their behalf.

“The time has come for women to compete with their male counterparts” said upcoming female poet Moreblessing Size. “Although it is tough in the poetry industry, as women we have to stand up and claim our rightful place in society in whatever we do. It is up to us, not anyone else to fight as we are not only doing it for ourselves, but for many generations to come after us,” she said.

“As women we should at least get inspiration from people such as Batsirai Chigama, Blackpearl and South African based Linda Gabriel who have made names for themselves around the world. The future is looking good because women are going out there making names for themselves, the sky is the limit,” said the 25-year-old Harare poet.

Size says although poetry is not rewarding, she is driven by passion and started writing poetry when she was in High School in Gweru. The highlight of her career came when she performed for the Zimbabwe International Book Fair Indaba 2012 alongside veteran poet, Albert Nyathi.

A professional librarian at the Women’s University in Africa, Size is a correspondent for an online magazine, Afro future.
