Fish farming to be revived

Henderson Research Institute has started reviving the fish farming industry that had collapsed due to economic hardships.

Speaking at a fish farming training session at the institute in Mazowe, HRI head of section in charge of fisheries, Clementine Zvavahera, said fish farming had the potential to improve the nutrition of farming families and create employment.

“Fish farming is a low input enterprise and not labour intensive. Fish do not require expensive feed as they consume animal manure and other locally available foods,” she said, adding that many farmers venture into poultry when fish farming is more viable. The country had several water bodies that were lying idle and could be used for fish farming.

“The training covers the necessary details on fish farming, siting of ponds and construction and also the preservation and marketing of the fish,” said Zvavahera. Several inquiries from farmers were received at this year’s agricultural show, leading to the training initiative.
