Freedom House hails COPAC draft

The COPAC draft constitution has received a major credibility boost ahead of the two-day Second All- Stake Holders Conference commencing on Monday following a Freedom House report which says the document is more democratic than the current Lancaster House Constitution.

A report produced by the US-based think tank this week says that the COPAC document is a far superior document as it seeks to limit the president’s powers.

Freedom House further praises the draft constitution for criminalizing the meddling of soldiers in the country’s political and electoral affairs as well as the arbitrary deployment of troops by any sitting president.

“This introduces the idea of transparency in the deployment of the military and allows Parliament and the public to monitor such deployments to prevent undercover military operations that usually result in human rights violations,” says the Freedom House report.

The also hails COPAC for removing the management of the voter registration and reposing it in the hands of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.
