Gwanda police in reign of terror

Gwanda police have unleashed a reign of terror in the area following the killing of their colleague by a gold panner last Monday, The Zimbabwean heard.

A gold panner allegedly stabbed to death Constable Blessing Mamimini officers and left two others seriously injured after a brawl at Phakama Business centre on Monday.

Gwanda police reportedly teargased and assaulted residents, resulting in some injuries.

Gwanda North legislator, Thandeko Zindi Mnkandla confirmed to The Zimbabwean that police have unleashed a reign of terror in Gwanda.

“Residents of the town are now gripped with fear that there will be more attacks,” Mnkandla said.

According to the Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP), some residents had to be admitted at Gwanda Provincial Hospital.

ZPP said their investigations reveal that hospital staff reportedly demanded clearance letters from the police before attending to them.

“The armed anti-riot police invaded bars and nightclubs and assaulted patrons in the following areas Pakama, Garikai,Ultra and Spitzkop on Monday and Tuesday night injuring more residents.

“The brutal attack and clashes came after the stabbing to death of a plainclothes officer by a suspected gold panner on Monday,” ZPP said.

Acting Matabeleland South police spokesperson, Sergeant Nkosilathi Sibanda refused to comment.
