I recently visited one of Harare’s oldest restaurants and noticed the following as I was about to be served a meal in the garden: They have no stainless sink as required by city by laws and they have constructed wooden structures right in the city centre. The waitresses take water from a pond and they have dirty, tattered tents; there is no sign of clean running water in the toilets and no visible license at the reception area, suggesting that they don’t have any required by city by laws.
Clean water is a priority for food business. One wonders if council is aware of these operations. Maybe they have turned a blind eye on this old restaurant because of the big name it used to have. – Bruce Rusike, Harare
