Human rights improve in Marange: ZELA

Human rights violations in the Marange diamond fields have declined, according to the Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association.

The Head of Research at ZELA, Shamiso Mtisi, made the remarks at a recent Civil Societies Organisation workshop.

“There is a clear sign of declining cases of human rights abuses at Marange diamond fields. Companies with mining concessions in Marange have secured their areas and have hired their own security details to protect their mining zones,” said Mtisi.

Mtisi said there were now very few cases of human rights violations. However, the ZELA official also human rights were not just related to physical abuse.

“Due to increased mining activities in Marange, there is massive water pollution and cattle are dying as a result. Mining companies are depriving village communities of clean drinking water, which in itself is a violation of human rights,” Mtisi said.
