She was speaking about a song that ridiculed former Big Brother StarGame housemate Maneta, and urged youthful artists “think first before releasing songs.”
“Maneta” was released by Fada WeMangoma and depicts the former BBA housemate as beautiful, but a drunkard with loose morals and values. The track has been described as derogatory to womanhood by the GCN director – despite being endorsed by MNET-Multichoice, sponsors of the reality television show.
Makoni said some songs perpetuate gender stereotypes and reverse empowerment programmes for girls. “The song is not good at all. It can incite hatred between young men and women. I am very positive that in our Zimbabwean community young men know what is insulting to girlhood and womanhood. Once you insult one girl, you virtually insult all,” said Makoni.
“Please know that music can mobilize people and create stereotypes. Revise your lyrics and never sing in a way that is so full of hatred. Urban Grooves boys – stop taking girls as sex objects as that is stone age,” she fumed.
