Match-fixer nabbed

Jimmy Mahleza, an official with ZIFA Manicaland Division Two side, Southdown FC, was recently arrested by Mutare police for alleged match-fixing.

Manicaland Police spokesperson, Enock Chishiri, confirmed Mahleza’s arrest and said the 30-year-old would appear in court soon. Mahleza allegedly tried to bribe referee, Stewart Samushonga, prior to a league match between his club and Mutare Polytechnic, who currently lead the 16-team log.

It is alleged that Mahleza approached Samushonga with $50 as a bribe, in return for his team winning the game, but the match official told him that that he was not the centre man on the day and refused the money.

Samushonga officiated in the match and when Mahleza made another attempt at half time, the referee alerted his assistants, referees’ association official, Given Chavhanga and Zifa administrator, Kundai Makwarise.

A trapped Mahleza gave the officials $30 and pledged to pay the reminder at the end of the match, but was later reported to the police, who arrested him.
