MDC Secretary General Priscilla Misihairambwi-Mushonga has encouraged women to deny their husbands conjugal rights if they do not register as voters for the forthcoming general elections.

Misihairambwi-Mushonga, who is also the Regional Integration Minister in the inclusive government, said this while addressing a peace rally at Chachacha grounds in Shurugwi over the weekend.

Zimbabweans have been known for voter apathy in the previous polls. With a population of about 12 million, less than half of the citizens have shown interest in taking part in elections.

In the last 2008 harmonised polls, less than five million people registered to vote with a lesser number finally taking to the polling booths on election day.

“Women can really be powerful in their own way. We have this potential to push our men to be active in national issues and that advantage should work for next elections,” said Misihairambwi-Mushonga.

“If a man comes home without registering to vote for the next elections, then we do not give them their rights (conjugal). But if they come with proof they have registered, then they can get them.”

The firebrand female politician who is one of the negotiators for the Global Political Agreement said her campaign strategy to force men to vote would be popularised across the country.

“I am taking this campaign to all parts of the country. It has worked in several countries across the globe and I am confident it can work for us here,” she said.
