Some players told The Zimbabwean early this week that the 2011 league runners-up had failed to meet its financial requirements to players for some weeks now. This is said to have killed morale and greatly contributed to the team’s slumber of late.
One player even said that the “moneybags” tag had now been reduced to a mockery to the players, who are currently suffering.
“When we joined, we thought this was the most organized club in the country, but from what we have experienced, lately we regret our moves. Dynamos and Caps United are much better because they are at times honest with their players when things are not well, not what is happening here at the moment,” he said.
Interim coach, Tendai Chikuni, acknowledged that there were problems in the team, but downplayed them.
“Of course we have our problems, just like any other institution, but can we be made a basket case like some big clubs in the league? We are simply going through a bad patch and very soon we will find our ground and begin to fight for honours again,” said Chikuni.
If threats are anything to go by, the club could lose as many players at the end of the season as they signed at their beginning. “Come season end, most of us players will be leaving this club, which is full of empty promises,” said another player.
The latest turn of events is in stark contrast with the standards the club set for themselves on winning promotion into the topflight league. They currently lie seventh on the log standings with 38 points from 24 games and are already out of the championship race this season.
