Mosquitoes cause havoc in Bulawayo

The Bulawayo city council has run out of chemicals to fumigate areas in the city where mosquitoes have become a menace.

The recent rains that fell in the city and the current soaring temperatures have been blamed for the outbreak of mosquitoes.

According to the latest council minutes seen by the Zimbabwean, breeding of the culex mosquito has been encountered in some streams in the city.

“No chemicals have been purchased so far to destroy mosquito larva which has been spotted in some of the streams in the city. The shortage of the chemicals will pose serious health problems, especially during this rainy season,” reads part of the council minutes.

The council minutes also cited manpower shortages as one of the other major challenges facing mosquito control in the city.

According to the minutes, only one team is manning the mosquito control section instead of the ideal three teams.

Mosquito outbreak has been reported in Tshabalala, Nketa, Mzilikazi, Magwegwe and Sizinda high density suburbs.
