Information at hand indicates that Mudenge, who had been ill for a long time, collapsed and died at a hotel some 30km outside Masvingo yesterday.
He had been complaining of dizziness.
Mudenge was due to address the 39th Southern African Society for Education conference at Great Zimbabwe.
Arrangements were being made last night to ferry his body to the mortuary in Masvingo.
Mudenge served as the Foreign Affairs Minister between 1995 and 2005, when he was switched to the education portfolio during a cabinet reshuffle.
A historian, Mudenge was also Higher Education minister between 1992 and 1995.
He was the MP for Masvingo North.
