Murambatsvina: 8 years on

Victims of Operation Murambatsvina, which left thousands homeless in 2005, are still living in squalid conditions at the City Council’s Mushando beer hall in Sakubva high density suburb.

Over 20 families are still living without proper sanitary facilities. Although a few houses were built under Operation Garikayi, the intended beneficiaries were side-lined, with the scheme only benefitting those with close links with Zanu (PF), including top police and army officials.

Mutare Residents and Ratepayers Coordinator, David Mutambirwa said the local authority and government should urgently address the issue. “The situation is dire and the local authority should do something about the victims who are living in squalid conditions at Mushando bar. It`s a serious violation of human rights as well as a health time bomb,” said Mutambirwa.

The Town Clerk, Obert Muzawazi , said the local authority was working on providing alternative land to the victims and promised Mushando bar would soon be cleared.
