This follows a visit to their church`s headquarters at Gandanzara shrine in Makoni district by Zanu (PF) National chairman Simon Khaya Moyo to mobilise support for the party.
He told thousands of worshippers that they should vote for President Robert Mugabe in the next election because he had championed the land “reform” and economic empowerment programmes.
He also claimed that MDC was advocating for the inclusion of homosexuals rights in the new constitution. “Zanu (PF) is fulfilling the prophecy by the late Baba Johanne Masowe that black people of this country will have total control of their economy,” he said.
Church elders who spoke to this paper said political parties should not tell them what to do and should not interfere into their business.
“We are not a political organisation and who are we to tell our members whom to vote for? They have their choice and as a church we respect the freedom of association,” said one elder who declined to named for security reasons.
Another elder said Zanu (PF) should not try to use their church to boost its dwindling support base but should just come out with clear and sound economic policies that will improve the lives of poor people. But one of the leaders of the church, when Moyo visited, openly declared that he was a Zanu (PF) member and urged others to follow suit.
