In Silobela, youth who gathered at Crossroads for Youth Agenda’s Board the Electoral Train road show warned that they are ready to thwart all efforts that are bent on dividing the youth ahead of elections and said they were now aware of the old and tired tactics that politicians employ to manipulate the youth for selfish personal gains.
“The youth here are ready for elections but this time we will not be used to beat up our parents like what happened in 2008. We cannot allow that to happen again because after the 2008 violence, the politicians disappeared and we are beginning to hear that politicians want to engage us now,” said Shyleen Moyo of Silobela.
Youth Agenda Trust senior programs officer Trust Nhubu called on the youth to register as voters and participate in the forthcoming referendum and general elections.
An estimated one thousand youth gathered in Chegutu and said that they will not be entertaining violence in their community this time around because they have leant the hard way that violence will not bring about development but breeds hatred among the youth.
They said that they will refuse to be used by politicians because history has taught them that they will be dumped soon after the elections. The youth said that they will participate fully in the forthcoming elections and also urged their peers to register as voters.
Youth Agenda Trust is conducting public meetings and road shows across the country that are aimed at encouraging youth to participate in the electoral process
