Actors take piracy head on

Several local actors have devised mechanisms to market and sell their productions personally to protect them from piracy that is rampant in the fragile film and music industry.

This development comes after relevant authorities such as the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe and the now defunct Anti-Piracy Organisation of Zimbabwe failed to come up with lasting solutions to curb piracy.

Actors such as Master Chirowodza of “Landlord nemaRoja” fame, street theatre comedian Jeffry “Aphiri” Chikwesere, Kapfupi’s former colleague Nyimo and the team behind the production of the action series “Go Chanaiwa Go” have been personally marketing their products.

The actors embarked on a whirlwind tour around the country in an endeavour to make revenue out of their works, citing lack of corporate support and piracy as the major factors behind their desperation.

Chirowodza, who was recently spotted in Masvingo marketing his two productions including “Vavakidzani”, appealed to the authorities to come up with solutions to piracy. Aphiri, who made his name with friend-cum-rival Freddy “Kapfupi” Manjalima, lambasted promoters in Harare who he said preferrd to sponsor established acts.
