Army, chiefs plan violent election

Despite President Robert Mugabe’s public calls for peaceful elections, documents in our possession make it clear that his party and the armed forces have a violent game plan. A group of top army personnel, working in cahoots with traditional leaders in Chikomba district, has launched an operation codenamed “Operation Nyika Haiendi/Protect Zimbabwe” to drum up support for Zanu (PF) ahead of elections.

A document leaked to The Zimbabwean shows that the team is headed by Brigadier General E. Choga, chairman of the Chikomba District War Veterans Association. Chiefs Mutekedza, Neshangwe, Chivese and Musarurwa lead the pack of traditional leaders involved in the operation, which is almost identical to what happened prior to the presidential run-off elections in June 2008. The mobilization teams, according to the document, held a meeting at the War Veterans Association offices on October 26 to map strategies and decided that mobilisation teams should visit business centres and villages in the district from Tuesday this week until November 12.

“Why the armed struggle was fought, the achievements or fruits of the armed struggle, the current challenges and the need to defend Zimbabwe at all costs are the subjects to be presented to the masses,” reads the document.

It names Team A as being led by one J. Chivandire, with members retired Major Chakacha, Mutuso, Mukumbi and G. Sobwe.

Another team is composed of six members and led by one Chikomba, while Retired Major General Mukorera is also part of the group.

Retired Major Rusero leads the third group which comprises five members and an unidentified ex-detainee.

Lieutenant Colonel J. Magwere is part of the fourth group, led by one Urombo and composed of six members.

An inside source said Operation would target perceived opponents of Zanu (PF) in the area and warn the electorate of the consequences of voting for the MDC-T in the forthcoming elections.

“The team has been instructed to go out and warn the electorate in Chikomba District that they risk a backlash should they vote for or campaign for MDC-T. Known supporters of the MDC-T have been targeted,” said the source.
