“Women wear many hats in society, they have a lot of roles to play. Without women there is no life,” she told The Zimbabwean. More than 20 paintings showing women active in their different roles are on display at the Bulawayo National Arts Gallery.
They include My Pillar, a painting that shows a mother figure, underlined by African curves which typify the natural beauty of a woman, Olwesine, showing a group of women meeting for prayers, and Expectations that explores what women expect from life and the opposite sex.
The exhibition is entitled ‘Inhlama’ – a reference to the raw paste made from flour and water that she has used as a medium. Gallery Director Voti Thebe says she is one of the few women who have held on as others have given up.
“I am inspired by people’s life experiences and expectations. For me to come up with this particular range, I was mostly inspired by mothers all over, especially those in communal areas who have a lot of roles to play,” Mathe said.
