Council is sabotaging my ward: Dladla

EMakhandeni Ward 11 Councillor Nduna Dladla has challenged his colleagues in the Bulawayo City Council to distribute resources fairly and support community developments projects in his area.

Elected into office in 2009, Dladla said his ward was lagging behind as some of the projects he had planned have been stymied by the council. “These include gardens where the community would produce vegetables so as to get a bit of income and also food,” he said.

Nduna applied for 8,000 sq/m on the northern side of EMakhandeni Tennis court for the garden last year – but the council has not responded to the application.

He blamed politicisation of development projects which has led to some areas benefiting more than others.

“I can tell you that some wards have up to eight boreholes while my ward has only two. At the same time houses were taken away from women who had formed clubs and earned a source of living through sewing – yet the community had paid $10 for the renovation of these houses,” he said.

However, during his tenure, he has managed to reduce violence and public nuisance in the suburb’s popular Wozawoza Sports Bar through the establishment a police camp behind the area.

“There was a community outcry that Entumbane Police Camp is too far to go to report cases especially at night. There was recurrent violence and public fighting in the area when people got drunk,” said the councillor, who also has plans to set up buildings in which youths can start projects such as welding, and to renovate the football field and tennis court.

He added that there was a need for a proper parking area and also that the terminus near EMakhandeni Supermarket needed to be converted to a flea market. He said financial constraints facing the Bulawayo City Council were affecting development plans and called for other stakeholders such as the business community to exercise social responsibility.

He accused councillors from the MDC-T of having an secret agenda of not supporting projects brought forward by councillors from the MDC-N, singling out the Mayor, Thaba Moyo, of selective response to issues based on party lines.
