Fake rape report

A local woman who made a fake report that she had been raped was brought before the Mutare Magistrates Court facing charges of providing false information to the police.

Memory Kwenje, 47, of Kwenje village, Chief Mutasa pleaded guilty when she appeared before Mutare provincial magistrate, Alex Shumba.

Public prosecutor, Fletcher Karombe, told the court that Kwenje made a false report at Manica Bridge Police Station that she had been raped twice by Itai Kuitika.

Kuitika was arrested and detained at Penhalonga police station for two nights. However, further investigations by police indicated that the two were lovers and had a misunderstanding when Kuitika opted to marry another local woman instead of Kwenje.

The court heard that Kwenje was then interrogated and revealed that she had made a false report to the police to fix Kuitika for dumping her. In her affidavit provided to the court as evidence, Kwenje admitted that she framed Kuitika after he ended their relationship prematurely.

In his judgment, magistrate Shumba sentenced her to perform 210 hours of community service at Vumbunu primary school.
