Three senior members of the BBC have quit their posts after a news program mistakenly accused a former Conservative Party figure of child sexual abuse. BBC chairman Chris Patten said there needed to be an “overhaul” of the broadcaster.
Abuse hearings
Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced a wide-ranging judicial investigation of a child abuse in religious and government institutions. The terms of the inquiry are yet to be drafted but the hearings could last several years.
Cattle massacre
At least 42 Kenyan police officers have been killed after being ambushed by cattle rustlers in the country’s north. Beasts are often stolen between two communities and police were responding.
It is the deadliest attack on police in Kenya’s history.
Taliban talks
Afghan president Hamid Karzai has signalled his government will return to official peace talks with the Taliban. Talks stalled when the negotiator was killed last year. He said the government will only meet with the non-terrorist Taliban members.
Aide jailed
An aide to former Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has been sentenced to almost 11 years in jail for corruption. Jose Dirceu set up a scheme that used public funds to pay for political projects. He rejected the “unfair sentence”.
Cleric released
A British court has released Muslim cleric Abu Qatada from jail after his seven-year battle to avoid deportation to Jordan. Jordanian authorities want to try him on terrorism charges. However, he will remain under strict observation of authorities.
