It was a tight finish by Royal Arrow and Choisir and a good day for D’Aquino who also won the Republic Cup with Choisir as he seeks to bring to an end the dominance of Kirk Swason and Lisa Harris who have made the Borrowdale race course their own hunting field.
Although Candymacan came third in the race that saw Sherman Brown in fouth place riding Captain's Tiger, the title had gone with Royal Arrow.
Now comes the HIRB Gold Sprint a Grade Three race with the same status as the Republic Cup but will be run over a shorter distance of 1 200 metres with eight horse already nominated for the event.
This could mean the race could even have fewer horses than the ZNA race which in the end had six horses after having attracted an initial number of 10 runners as fields continue to dwindle at Borrowdale race course.
The final acceptances for the HIRB Sprint will be declared next week but still Burmese Cat who has become a regular feature at Borrowdale has been nominated. The race has also attracted Alyson Wright’s Whole Kaboodle, one of the two horses which have made dominant appearances in most of the biggest races this year.
Wright also has Jet Command and Richie Rich in the race, while Lisa Harris has Syrachuse and Officer’s Class.Susan Gail Oden a newcomer at Borrowdale throws in Penthouse while veteran champion trainer Kirk Swanson saddles Lil ‘Abner.
The HIRB Gold Sprint with a stake money of $14,000 is the major feature race on that day but the draw, the weights, and the odds will only be released on the day of the final acceptances.
