Coordinator and former PSL Chief Executive Officer, Chris Sambo, said recently that most of the teams no longer had training or match balls, while players’ uniforms bought in 2010 no longer fit.
The death of principal sponsor Tendai Mupfurutsa early this year, compounded the league’s problems, as it has struggled to find another benefactor. The famous musician had provided uniforms, match balls, food for the players and prize money for the league title race.
Sambo said players were so excited about participating in the competition that its collapse would be a big blow not only to them, but also their relatives, who came in their thousands to watch the matches.
He formed the league with the aim of raising awareness of the HIV pandemic through women’s participation in organised league football. It started with 16 teams in Harare, but had expanded to other parts of the country.
