The exhibition, which is held under the theme: Malaria, a challenge for research, will run for three months before it is taken to the VaTonga Community Museum in Binga. In Zimbabwe, it is estimated that around one million people are affected by malaria every year. In the wake of the approaching rainy season, Alliance Francaise de Bulawayo took the initiative to conscientise the public about malaria.
The Director of the Museum, Moira FitzPatrick, said the exhibition was done at the museum in a bid to attract the attention of those who frequent the place and educate them about the killer disease.
“Malaria is one of the leading diseases in Zimbabwe, so we decided that it would be of great importance to teach people how to prevent it,” she said. She added that the initiative targeted mostly young people of a school-going age.
Peter Rollason, a pharmacist and research specialist, warned that there was a need to curb malaria.
“Malaria needs to be contained to avoid unnecessary deaths. People need to know that there are simple things they can do to avoid contracting the disease,” he said.
