MDC corruption probe widens

The mainstream MDC led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has intensified its investigations to flush out corrupt city fathers, in a bid to clean up the party ahead of elections likely in 2013.

“Probe teams will gather evidence from various residents’ associations and MDC provincial and district executives, among other stakeholders.

It will cover areas such as service delivery, the conduct of MDC-T elected ward councillors, housing stand allocations and the life styles of ward councillors that have changed since getting into office,” said a top party official.

On Thursday, a probe team visited Marondera and met with party structures before engaging the residents’ association and councillors. MDC-T spokesperson, Douglas Mwonzora, confirmed the probe.

“Probe teams will be visiting various local authorities to further assess how MDC-T elected councillors are performing in council. There will also be investigations into corruption and incompetence allegations levelled against some of the city fathers. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against those found wanting.”

Mwonzora said competence assessment of elected MDC-T office bearers, would be an ongoing exercise, “as the party wanted to maintain its excellence tag”.
