Pensioners will get free food hampers every month, amid reports that many elderly people get less than $100 in pension allowances a month. However, some people in Masvingo have questioned the timing of the programme by the MDC-T Masvingo urban legislator claiming that it is a campaign gimmick.

“I want to make it clear that everyone who is above 60 will benefit from this scheme,” said Matutu. “I have realised that youths are used by politicians during election time and I feel the elderly are just getting a raw deal from us leaders.”

Matutu said hunger knew no boundary and all people regardless of their political affiliation needed food. Dozens of senior citizens in Masvingo have so far benefitted from the scheme.
