The former Highlanders utility player has made an immediate impact at the side, which he has helped to shoot up the standings, collecting personal accolades in the process. Such has been the impact of the 17-year-old that during the college’s sports banquet recently, he was voted the Most Offensive Player for his 15 goals and 12 assists in 17 games.
He was also drafted into both the New England Schools Junior All Star team and the overall All Star Team. Mpofu’s performances augur well for Cushing, who have recorded 12 wins, four draws and lost just once. He hopes to use the accolades as a springboard to extend his scholarship at the Massachusetts beyond the current two years.
“The All Star games enable colleges a chance to assess players closely and offers players a good opportunity for a full scholarship, which I am now chasing,” said the player who recently netted a brace on his All Stars debut in a 4-1 win over the West stream.
“I am grateful to my family, teammates and coaches for the huge role they have played supporting me. I am thankful especially to my father, who unfortunately could not play professionally but had to quit and find alternative employment to tend for my ailing grandmother back in the village. He keeps on pushing me to the next level and is always offering advice.”
Teammates are also impressed.
“The whole school knows who he is and everyone loves him. He is now one of the most liked kids in school for humility and exciting personality. It is a pleasure to have him here. He is always on time on time for practice. Before games, I have a pre-game ritual with him so we pump each other up. I only do it with him because we both love this sport and we give 110 per cent at every practice session and games. We are lucky to have him,” said teammate Alexandre Reissmann.
“Getting to know Ackim, an amazing person and the humble soccer player, is something that I will forever cherish. He is a gift from God! Playing alongside him and having him as a roommate has been amazing. This kid is destined to go far,” said Lukinhas Pastor de Araujo Jr.
