Obama, nothing to celebrate: Charamba

There is nothing to celebrate about Barack Obama’s re-election as US president, Presidential spokesperson George Charamba said.

President Obama and his family celebrate election victory.

Obama, a Democrat, last week beat Mitt Romney, a Republican, in one of the most closely contested presidential polls in American history, to gain a second and last four-year term.

Charamba’s remarks are at odds with the position given by Zanu (PF) Secretary for Administration, Didymus Mutasa who last week hailed US polls as a blow to racism.

“What matters most is not the colour of the American president, but the colour of the US policies and we have very little to celebrate as Zimbabweans about Obama’s victory,” said Charamba.

MDC-T National spokesperson, Douglas Mwonzora, hailed the recent polls in the US as a great lesson for Zimbabwe.

“The US polls must be a great lesson for the people of Zimbabwe. The polls were held with no violence and without any reports of electoral fraud and Zimbabwe should follow suit,” said Mwonzora. “What America did is not only a lesson to Zimbabwe, but to Mugabe as well. Mugabe, like Mitt Romney of America, must learn to accept election results and not make a repeat of what he did in 2008.”

He appealed to other political parties to resolve to fight Zanu (PF) under a united front led by his party. “Let’s fight Zanu (PF) under one banner. Let’s bury our political hatchet because this is not time to form small political alliances. We must unite under Tsvangirai to dislodge Mugabe in the impending elections,” Mwonzora said.

What do you think?

Can we learn anything from Obama’s re-election and the election process in America?
