“Councillor Paul Malaba is particularly worried about the fouling and destruction of the environment and the resulting health threat to the surrounding residential areas,” read a recent city council health report.
A BCC study indicates that despite fines of up to $20 per head for fouling in open spaces, open air churches are continuing to grow. Since last year, the council has been clamping down on church groups worshipping in the open with no access to toilets and running water.
The BCC environmental experts have identified open-air churches as a potential hazard for cholera and typhoid outbreaks.
The council is now studying a proposal to turn idle beer halls into places of worship in a bid to contain the environmental hazard.
