Plan Zim tackles child abuse

Plan Zimbabwe has so far facilitated 2 384 cases of child abuse in the courts, whilst 87 649 children have accessed child protection information from their counselling centres. Plan Zimbabwe Programmes Unit manager in Manicaland, Stanley Dahwa, said concerted efforts needed to be made to stop further abuse of children.

“It’s a cause for concern and there is a need for the protection of the girl child through empowerment programmes,”said Dahwa. He added that statistics indicated that perpetrators of such cases were within the community.

He also said his organisation has facilitated the trial of 340 cases of child abuse in courts in areas such as Mutoko, Tsholotsho and Mutasa district.

Mutasa District Education Inspector, Derrick Duma, said cases of early pregnancies and child marriages were a cause for concern and called for concerted efforts by all stakeholders alleviate the plight of children.

“We are very worried about this trend and this serious violation of child rights. The time to take action is now,” said Duma.
