Premiership beckons for Chiredzi

Premiership action is beckoning for Chiredzi, with Triangle FC’s fine run in the ZIFA Eastern Region Division One league seemingly set to end decades of so-near-yet-so-far-episodes of PSL dreams.

Triangle had opened a four-point lead at the summit of the log, with the Gishon Ntini-coached side having amassed 67 points from 26 matches, with three matches to go.

They only need to collect maximum points in their next matches against Chivhu Stars (away) and Mutare City Rovers at home, to be crowned champions. Ntini believes concentration will do the trick.

“We need to focus on our remaining matches. We have a game in hand, so that is another advantage for us. This is the time for us to make history and the guys are aware of that. We have experienced players who have seen it before and I don’t think we are going to falter at the last moment,” he said.

Triangle, owned by giant sugar-producing company, Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe, is in stiff competition with Hippo Valley in their bid to return to top-flight football action. They have alternated on the top-spot since the beginning of the season, but the sugar stars can count on the vast experience of former Warriors and Dynamos midfielder, Leo Kurauzvione, former Caps United captain David Sengu and Sebastian Matende.

Sport development administrator, Festus Dumbu, said they were aiming at Chiredzi having a resident premiership team, as soccer remained the only major recreation facility in the small township. “People have been supporting soccer with passion here and the attendance figures have been excellent, despite the fact we are playing Division One football,” he said.

“Our aim is that we should have at least two football clubs in the premiership and everyone is determined to see that achieved. The last time we had a PSL club was when Hippo played there many years ago.”

Supporters Association committee member, Elijah Chikati, said his side had been closer to the title before, adding that should they fail in their promotion bid this year, they would “retire” supporting soccer.

“For the past few years we have been closer to the title and on many occasions we have ended runners up. Last year we came second to Buffaloes and it was painful, so I have everything to believe that this year is ours. I think as supporters we have been doing the most wonderful job by flocking to the stadiums in our numbers to support them,” he said.
