Rampant abuse in prisons

The high levels of abuse in the country’s prisons means Zimbabwe is lagging behind in its bid to conform to regional and international standards, according to the Zimbabwe Association of Crime Prevention and Rehabilitation of the Offender.

In a recent interview, the Chief Executive Officer of ZACRO, Edson Chiota said the development was complicating his association’s work of reintegrating ex-convicts into mainstream society.

“The general conditions in the country’s prisons are not so appealing. It is a huge challenge to rehabilitate someone who has become used to hostile treatment,” said Chiota.

ZACRO is a non-governmental organisation founded in 1923 as a prisoner’s aid society. Chiota expressed concern that despite efforts by ZACRO to ensure Zimbabwe adheres to internationally accepted standards on treatment of prisoners, the abuse of inmates remained rampant.

“The prisoners are being deprived of basic necessities such as a proper uniform and a good, nutritional diet,” said Chiota. Chiota castigated the government for turning a blind eye to the welfare of Prisoners.
