A Zimbabwean Civil Society delegation early this week pleaded with Zambian officials and the Southern African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes to persuade the Zambian government, SADC and the AU to force the implementation of agreed reforms in the Global Political Agreement. They said these pro-democracy resolutions, also contained in SADC communiqués, would if followed, pave way for credible elections in Zimbabwe, return peace and prosperity and enhance political and democratic stability in the region.
Isuzu boost
Isuzu South Africa recently donated two vehicles to veterinary students involved in running the Isuzu Vet Books for Africa project. This is expected to boost their work in uplifting veterinary education in the continent. The team, which left Pretoria October 29, will tour Mozambique,
Tanzania, Kenya and Zimbabwe, where they will leave textbooks and journals of at veterinary faculties of universities.
Prison overhaul
The Mozambican parliament recently passed the first reading of a government bill overhauling the Mozambican prison service. The new National Penitentiary Service will guarantee the implementation of court decisions in matters of imprisonment and of alternative penalties, and ensure the conditions for the rehabilitation and social reinsertion of convicted citizens.
Mbeki wins award
Former South African president Thabo Mbeki has been named “African of the Year” for his “persistent and consistent” efforts to avert war between
Sudan and South Sudan. Former Tanzanian Prime Minister and Organisation of African Unity head, Salim Ahmed Salim, said Mbeki, broker of Zimbabwe’s Global Political Agreement, but flashed out of the SA Presidency in 2008, had displayed “outstanding leadership” of the AU Union’s High-Level Implementation Panel on Sudan.
