Residents reject $32m budget

The Gweru United Residents Association has protested against the council’s proposed $32 million budget, which is set to see a sharp increase in tariffs.

The budget has been raised from 2012’s $20 million. Cornelius Silipiwe, the GURA chairperson, told The Zimbabwean that what the city fathers were proposing was above the earnings of ordinary residents.

“Residents have failed to settle their bills in the past and so when you increase the tarrifs, how do you expect them to pay?” asked Selipiwe.

It is understood Gweru is owed about $8 million by residents while industry’s arrears have ballooned to $16 million in unpaid rates.
