SA police spokesperson Brigadier Lindela Mashigo voiced concern and disappoint over continued violence perpetrated by Zimbabwean Rhumba music followers.
“We will not condone violence. In the last month two people were killed during different shows and we are stepping up gears. Very soon we will advise the Department of Arts not to sanction shows hosted by Zimbabwean Rhumba artists,” said SA police spokesperson Brigadier Lindela Mashigo.
In Tembisa last week in a show hosted by Abafundisi and Chauke a fan was shot dead whilst last month at Safari hotel where Madalaboy and Allen Ndoda were performing another fan was murdered by unknown assailants.
Madalaboy challenged fellow musicians to tighten their security.
“Tight security is the only way forward. We know some of our fellow musicians who were robbed of their cash during these live shows. Not only fans suffer due to this violence we are also caught in the process,” he said.
Gospel artist Fidas Sibanda of Ofakazi Gospel group also lamented fans perpetrating violence during shows as ‘misguided opportunists’. “Artists must unite and fight these rowdy elements that are a threat to our shows. We are very close to being banned performing here just because of continued escalating violence cases,” he warned.
Patrick Sibanda of Living-way Music Promotions and Entertainment urged police to maintain high visibility during shows.
“Misbehaving fans, most of them drunk, are always involved in fights at our shows. The cops should have a strong presence because these places are now turning into a haven for criminals. I was recently slapped with a R4,000 fine by Safari hotel’s owners following misbehaving of rowdy fans during a show held by Allen Ndoda and Madalaboy. The show was called to a premature end and police and members of the Fire Brigade were called to the scene as matters got out of hand,” said Sibanda.
