Soccer star finalists named

Hot favourite, Denver Mukamba of Dynamos, is among the 11 finalists for the 2012 Castle Soccer Star of the Year Award, following this year’s selection held by soccer writers, referees and Premier Soccer League coaches in Harare on Saturday.

All those fingered in the Asiagate scandal were disqualified, forcing Shabanie coach, Luke Masomere, to leave the venue of selection where he had come to join the rest of the Premier Soccer League coaches.

As expected, the top teams according to the Premier Soccer League standings provided the bulk of the players, with Highlanders having the highest number, after contributing four.

These are Innocent Mapuranga, Masimba Mambare, Mthulisi Maphosa, and goalkeeper, Ariel Sibanda.

Apart from Mukamba, Dynamos also have Partson Jaure while Monomotapa for all their efforts this year only had Ronald Chitiyo on the famous calendar.

Rodwell Chinyengetere of Hwange, who was however injured after playing more than the stipulated number of games, also made it among the 11.

Other players that were selected are Felix Chindungo of Chicken Inn and the country leading scorer Nelson Mazivisa of Sahabanie. Mazivisa has scored 18 goals, three more than Roderick Mutuma s in the last season.

The panel of selectors, comprising of soccer writers, referees and coaches also selected the Coach of the Year.

His name and those of the Soccer Star of the Year and the runners-up will be kept a secret until the special annual banquet to be held later in the year.
