Soldier politicians must throw guns away

EDITOR - I see nothing wrong with former military personnel joining politics. These guys have been in politics since the liberation struggle and let us remember that they are the ones who mobilized us to fight against the colonialists while Mugabe and the other lot were relaxing in Mozambique.

In fact get it right that at one time the old man would enjoy his teaching profession teaching at a Catholic university in Quelimane while the likes of Mayor Urimbo were fighting for their lives in Nyajena. I want to believe that soldiers, especially war veterans who valued the role of the Povo during their time will not turn into Zvimbwamupengo. They know where they came from.

It is, however, important to note that soldiers who decide to join the legislative team have to throw their guns away. The decision by the soldiers could be a wake up call for Zanu (PF) and I want to believe that the new team, if voted into power, could be in a position to debate the succession issue without fear. As to whether the team of solders would win I would say “Yes” and “No”.

There are certain soldiers who are moderate and they stand a chance. I wasn’t happy when I read the list of would-be candidates. The guys are not all that strong. I wonder if Wing Commander Makurumidze would throw his name into the hat as well. The man seems to have the people at heart. Those who worked with him in Gaza Province agree with me. My No lies on the fact that the present Zanu (PF) has done the damage to the party and those who decide to revive it today are likely to hit a concrete wall.

People, especially the Karangas are hard nuts. Kana vati “Bodo” they mean it. Their time is likely to come after Tsvangirai’s spoils. This is because as of now Tsvangirai could be a better devil that people may opt for in order to get rid of the old man and all the corrupt Zanu fatcats. – ALFRED MAFUNU, by email
