UNDP funds local authorities

The United Nations Development Programme has released $17 million to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development for capacity building.

The fund comes at a time most local authorities are struggling to operate effectively due to financial restraints. Killen Mpingo, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, made the announcement while addressing an annual rural district council chief executive officers’ conference recently.

“The funding will go a long way towards revitalizing operations in local authorities.”

He added that, while the country went through a rough path economically in the last decade, the rural district councils tended to perform better than urban local authorities. “Some of the rural district councils registered development, unlike most urban councils,” he said.

Speaking at the same occasion, Zimbabwe Local Government Association President, Nimrod Chiminya, to establish rapport with various stakeholders.

He emphasized he need for RDCs to embrace Information, Communication and Technology as a tool for development.
