Uproar over bail for murder suspects

The release of six Zanu (PF) activists accused of murdering MDC-T Ward 1 Chairperson for Nyamapanda, Cephas Magura, has raised an outcry, with observers saying it exposes Zanu (PF)’s overbearing influence over the judiciary.

David Chimukoko, Zanu (PF) councillor for Chimukoko village, Raphael Bobo, Biggie Office, Graciano Kazingizi, Philip Katsande and Perkins Karikoga, were each granted $100 bail by High Court Judge, Justice Hlekani Mwayera.

They face charges of murder and public violence. Legal experts and political analysts say their release on bail is a miscarriage of justice. The MDC-T sharply contrasted this case with that of their own 29 activists who have been in detention for more than a year for allegedly murdering a police officer.

“We are absolutely disgusted by this selective application of the law. The Magura case is even more serious because the people who murdered him were caught red handed. Madzore and others were not even at the scene of the murder. It is very unfair how the law is being applied in this case,” said MDC-T spokesperson, Douglas Mwonzora.

“The selective application of the law is the hallmark of Zanu (PF) and it becomes hard to say the judiciary is non-partisan. It is clearly partisan in its application of the law,” said political analyst John Makumbe.

Earlier this year, six police officers from Shamva Police Station accused of murdering a local resident, Luxmore Chivambo, were granted $50 bail each.
