Villagers riled by wayward students

Community members here are urging stern action against students at Chitandara Secondary School whom they say are engaging in anti-social behaviour.

This came to light at a recent three-day training workshop on child rights advocacy and education, hosted by Hope Orphans Support Services and conducted by Defence For Children International-Zimbabwe , also known as New Hope Zimbabwe Trust.

“Students at Chitandara Secondary School in Ward 15 have become wayward and the community is at a loss as to what has gotten into them,” said Shepherd Chawira, the Director of HOSS, in an interview.

Several people who attended the workshop narrated the goings-on at the school, accusing the students of wild behaviour and disrespect for teachers and adults.

“This school has just got out of hand with most of these students playing truant, hanging around local shops and bars and openly courting in the bushes during school time,” said a local teacher, who attended the workshop, speaking on condition of anonymity for professional reasons.

Headman John Mhembere of Tapfuma village which is near the school, said many students defied authority and teachers were coming to work only to stand in front of an empty classroom. Efforts by school authorities to discipline the students have been met with defiance.
