Worried about Dhlakama’s back-to-bush move

Alfonso Dhlakama and a battalion of his former Mozambique National Resistance (RENAMO) rebels have just moved back to their war time bush headquarters, close to the Gorongosa Game Park in protest. They have vowed to remain in the bush for an ‘indefinite period of time’ until their demands for greater inclusion of RENAMO fighters in the country’s armed forces, the revision of the election laws and a ‘new political order’ are met. Dhlakama accuses government leaders o

One does not need to be a security specialist to see that there is a foreign hand behind Dhlakama’s ‘back to bush option’ with the intention of destabilizing not just Mozambique but the entire region to further their selfish interests. The big question is; what then can Zimbabwe do about this? Stand and watch in the name of ‘not interfering in another nation’s internal affairs,’ while one of Africa’s most brutal rebel groups is regrouping and re-arming right on our backyard?

Dhlakama is no longer Mozambique’s problem alone, he is now a regional problem. So regional resources should be mobilized to dissuade RENAMO from choosing the military option. His relocation to Gorongosa with armed men constitutes a declaration of war. If brutal force is the only language he understands, then brutal force should be used to negotiate with him – and the time to do so is now.

Should RENAMO be allowed to resurrect as a military force it will throw Mozambique into turmoil and sow instability in the region. Just like before, innocent people will be killed, homes will be destroyed, families displaced and property damaged.

WE could see RENAMO once more crossing into Zimbabwe to rape maim and kill at will, burning down homes and poisoning water sources, just like before. The news that RENAMO has moved back to Gorongosa must have sent shivers down the spines of thousands of Zimbabwean villagers living along the border. And just like before, no doubt – RENAMO will strangle the Beira Corridor. They are very much our problem too and just like before we should go after them.
