YAT Chairperson abducted at gunpoint

Youth Agenda Trust chairperson for Chinhoyi district, Ishmael Gawa, was last week kidnapped by unknown security agents on his way from work and bundled him into an unmarked car.

Gawa, who has survived previous attempts on his life while doing youth work in the communities of Chinhoyi was kidnapped at gunpoint by two men and one woman in plain clothes who forced him into a white Toyota Chaser without number plates which then sped off at high speed.

During the time he was held, the security agents quizzed him on the location and activities of Youth Agenda Trust before accusing him of conducting activities that could effect regime change in Zimbabwe.

Gawa survived death by a whisker after the gun totting security details lost control of their vehicle which had burst its rear tyre which gave him the opportunity to flee into the bush. The abductors fired several shots to scare him but he managed to escape. He however lost his laptop and two mobile phones which were confiscated by the security agents.

The matter was reported to Chinhoyi Police Station and the police visited the scene of the crime. The Police are still investigating the matter but Gawa is still living in hiding as the security details are still frantically trying to locate him and have been calling him on his phone threatening unspecified action. The Police have not done anything to nab the criminals.

Youth Agenda Programs Manager Lawrence Mashungu said it is unfortunate that at this stage of the implementation of the Global Political Agreement, it is clear that there are some people who are not willing to institute some reforms as spelt out by the agreement such as security sector realignment.
