The move has been hailed as a desperate attempt to drum up support in Manicaland ahead of an anticipated election.
Addressing the party’s Women’s League at Odzi Country Club recently, Zanu (PF) National Women’s League Chairperson, Oppah Muchinguri, urged supporters to form groups so that she might enable them to buy bales of clothes from Mozambique without interferenece from border officials.
“Just come to me and I will facilitate trips and documents for you to go to Mozambique and bring bales of secondhand clothes home to sell. For those without passports, don’t worry we will facilitate for your trips with Immigration officials,” she told the gathering. “Don’t worry about ZIMRA or police, we will simply write a letter and give them an instruction.”
Sources at Zimbabwe Revenue Authority who declined to be named said members from the women’s league made regular trips to Mozambique to buy second hands clothes.
