Zanu officials address strike

A delegation of top Zanu (PF) officials last week visited the site where the party intends to hold its next annual conference to quell protests by over 200 workers who are building the $6.5 million facility.

It is understood the visit was out of fear of embarrassment in case the centre is not completed in time for the 4 December conference. The visit came a few days after the workers protested against inhumane treatment and poor wages at the hands of their Chinese contractors.

The workers, drawn from local communities, had also complained about long working hours without compensation.

Party National Chairman Simon Khaya Moyo, national Political Commissar Webster Shamu, Legal Affairs Secretary Emmerson Mnangagwa and politburo members Sydney Sekeramai and Nicholas Goche visited the centre.

Workers at the site who spoke to The Zimbabwean said the delegation had impressed on them the need to complete construction, which started three days late, on time.

“They all said we should not focus on issues to do with logistics but focus on the size of the meeting to be held at the place,” said one worker.

Other workers said if their concerns were dishonoured, they would resort to industrial action.
