Zanu (PF) can have Mutambara: Ncube

The MDC led by Welshman Ncube has said it will not stop the fight to have its leader sworn in as a principal in the Government of National Unity and as Deputy Prime Minister. The party said it had “donated” current DPM and former leader of the party, Arthur Mutambara, to Zanu (PF) after he was defeated in elections to choose a new president last year.

The Deputy Spokesperson, Kurauone Chihwai, said the party had won all court cases relating to the issue and Mutambara had lost his bid to remain as leader of the party. “This means he is no longer a principal in the GNU. Neither can he still remain a Deputy Prime Minister. The SADC has admitted this,” said Chihwai.

“Mugabe and Tsvangirai are clearly attempting to de-legitimise our party by their continued refusal to swear in Ncube as DPM,” he said. The party has approached South African President Jacob Zuma, who is the mediator to the country’s Global Political Agreement, to intervene following Mutambara’s continued stay as a principal and senior cabinet official. Ncube, in a recent interview with The Zimbabwean, revealed that Mugabe had told him he was not comfortable with deposing Mutambara.

“He said it would set a bad precedent if Mutambara was made to stand down from his position as DPM. I wondered what bad precedent but now understand it. It is because Mugabe is afraid of being deposed himself. He seems to think that he will rule this country even from beyond his grave,” said Ncube.
