The boreholes were sunk under the Rural Water, Sanitation and
Hygiene Programme that was launched in the same month by government,
 UNICEF and DfID.
Bulilima Rural District Council Chief Executive Officer, John Ncube,
said the WASH programme had vastly improved water access.
“Communities now have access to clean water. In the past, they used to
collect water from unsafe water sources like rivers due to the limited
number of boreholes,” said Ncube.
He urged the government to construct a dam in Bulilima as a
medium-to-long term project to deal with water woes.
“The construction of a dam has long term benefits in that communities
will also be able to conduct irrigation schemes,” he added.
The government’s WASH project is expected to cover five provinces and will
be implemented over the next four years.
