Emotional intelligence: a smart way to boost business

To be successful, “you require the effective awareness, control and management of your own emotions, and those of other people. It’s the degree of social or interpersonal intelligence that dictates success in the workplace,” says Zimbabwean-born entrepreneur Shamiso Manyika.

Hailing from Zvimba, Manyika (27) is one of female entrepreneurs who in recent years has proved that to succeed in business, you need to manage emotional intelligence – that is, the awareness of your own others’ emotions.

“In business you need employees who are able to control their emotions, maintain a positive attitude towards work and problem solving, effectively communicate their feelings and be willing to listen to the feelings of others and take responsibility of their emotions,” said Manyika.

“I have employed a lot of people from across the SADC region and I conquered my competitors through this factor. I always try to indoctrinate my employees in emotional intelligence as it helps to lure more clients and customers to my business,” added Manyika.

She started her business interests in 2003 in Johannesburg after walking street after street, scouring shops and tuck shops, trying to get employment, but nothing paid dividends. Since then she has never looked back.

In 2005, Manyika established her first company, GET and Projects, manufacturing curtains, blankets and interior home decorations. A number of top-ranking personalities and government officials from Zimbabwe and South Africa are her satisfied customers. In the last four years she also won tenders from Johannesburg City Council to decorate and maintain its buildings.

“I want to supply the whole of Africa because my material can stand it at international level. I am the best in the region and no one can conquer me,” she said.

In 2010, she established her second company, Shamy Events, which specializes in events co-coordination. This saw her busy throughout the FIFA 2010 World Cup, when she provided hotel catering for more than 100,000 guests.

Manyika also caters for soccer events such as MTN tournament, Telkom Charity Cup, Vodacom Cup and PSL events.

She aims to represent Zimbabwe and Southern Africa at an international level as a successful young woman. Manyika was born in Bulawayo and attended Lukhanyiso Primary School and Mpopoma High School where she completed her Ordinary level in 2002. After realizing that the country’s economy was heading for a downfall, she decided to move in search of greener pastures at the tender age of17.
