Nyandoro, who became one of Zimbabwe’s youngest town mayors at the age of 32, told his MDC party supporters at Cherutombo, Marondera, to nominate someone else.

“Politics is a game and, like a relay race, one should at some point pass the baton stick on to someone else. Public offices like that of councillor, MP and senator should not be regarded as a career. Five years as mayor is a long time. So I am making way for new brains,” said Nyandoro.

Back to the trenches

He later told The Zimbabwean that if election results did not come out ‘right’, he would go back into the trenches and continue the fight against Zanu (PF).

“I realised that when we got into the GNU, as MDC we somehow lost focus of our main political objective, to kick Zanu (PF) out of power. This is the struggle I will champion from the trenches,” said thet mayor.

Nyandoro said democracy was a dream and despite the country having educated and skilled manpower, there were no jobs.

“The people of Zimbabwe must fight the common enemy and turn the economy around. We cannot have a situation where there are no job opportunities. Highly educated and skilled people continue to roam the streets because Zanu (PF) does not want to let go of power. I am adopting a new strategy to deliver democracy and development to the country,” said Nyandoro, adding that he would consider taking a public administration career in the new Zimbabwe.

Proud of achievements

He said he was proud to leave public office for now, with a string of achievements as mayor.

“When I came into office in 2009, the council was not delivering services to rate payers. With fellow MDC-T councillors, we managed to turn the council around. Service delivery was resuscitated and water and sewer services came back to life. The council constructed a new residential suburb in Lower Paradise and three companies have been contracted to service the 15,000 housing units in Hunyani suburb.

Nyandoro recently acquired a diploma in local government and administration from The University of Zimbabwe.

“Politicians should empower themselves with education and learn to move on with life outside politics. Development will only be obtained when new blood is regularly infused into all sectors of the economy. The old guard must call it a day.”

The youthful city father said Zanu (PF) should learn from MDC officials who were leaving public offices after only one five year term.

Member of Parliament for Buhera West, Eric Matinenga, also indicated that he would be handing over to Professor John Makumbe at the end of his first five-year term in parliament.
