In the 2008 elections, Russia was the only European country invited while 23 African and several Asian nations were called to observe the polls. Western observers were not allowed into the country with Zanu (PF) arguing that they were biased.

President Robert Mugabe has already hinted that elections will be held in March next year.

“I hope that election observers will be welcome in the coming election. It will, however, be up to the Zimbabwean government to decide on whom they want to invite.

“In UK we have international observers coming to see our elections and I hope it will be the same here. By bringing in observers Zimbabwe will signal a very strong intention to have elections that are different from the 2008 elections,” she said.

‘We want to see a free and fair election and the involvement of international observers will give Zimbabwe credit’ The top diplomat added that the involvement of international observers would ensure a free and fair election in the country.

“We want to see a free and fair election and the involvement of international observers will give Zimbabwe credit,” she said.

Recently, Zimbabwe Election Support Network told The Zimbabwean that they wanted observers to be given a monitoring status in the upcoming election so that they could intervene in the event of any anomalies.

Observers only record what they witness but have no authority to step in.
