Kapini back in February

Despite making a steady recovery from an ankle injury, goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini has ruled out any chances of featuring for his South African side, Amazulu, this year.

The “Usuthu” skipper resumed light training earlier than anticipated, raising hope that he would soon return to help the struggling side bounce back from a disappointing start to the season.

However, the former Highlanders goal-minder, injured in August, has ruled out the possibility of that happening. “I cannot rush myself back into action just because the team is struggling,” he told The Zimbabwean recently.

“I have resumed training but I am far from regaining full fitness. The most realistic projection is that I will only resume playing in the second half of the season. At the moment, I am relaxing and following advice from the medical staff.”

The setback means Amazulu will only have their skipper back in February, as the Absa Premiership will only resume in the middle of that month, after a break for the festive season and the African Nations Cup early next year.

Amazulu, who are flirting with relegation, have struggled in the absence of the 28-year-old goalkeeper, who sustained the injury at training. For the third time into a season, the Durban-based side occupies 14th position in the 16-team log.

“It is always difficult to watch from the sidelines when one’s team is struggling. But I am helping the boys maintain the morale in the camp. The players have been giving it their all, but results have not come our way,” said Kapini.
